Malik bin Al-Rayb Al-Tamimi is a poet from Bani Mazen bin Amr bin Tamim, and his nickname is Abu Uqbah. He grew up in Najd and was one of the knights of Bani Mazen. He was a brave and deadly young man who did not sleep at night except with his sword draped over him, but he used his strength to cut off the road with three of his friends. He stuck to Shazath Al-Dhabi, about whom the Arabs said he was more thieving than Shazath. One day, Saeed bin Othman bin Affan, the son of the companion Othman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with them both), passed by him while he was on his way to quell a rebellion in the land of Khurasan, so he tempted him to fight in the way of Allah instead of cutting off the road. Malik responded to Saeed’s advice and went with him, and he did well and his conduct improved. On his return after the conquest, while they were on the way back, he fell seriously ill, or it is said that a snake bit him while he was taking a siesta, so the poison spread through his veins and he felt death, so he said this poem in which he mourns himself. His poem became known as the Elegy of Malik bin Al-Rayb Al-Tamimi. Who is behind me? And the pearls of my two elders, both of whom are compassionate and sincere towards me, even if they forbid me. And the pearls of the men who are witnesses to my affair, who are not to be shortened from my bonds. And the pearls of passion from where my companions call. And the pearls of my stubbornness and the pearls of my end. I remembered who is crying for me, but I found nothing but the sword and the spear of Rudayni crying. And a blond man, weaved, dragging his reins to the water. Death left him no water carrier. But at the ends of (the fat one) are women who are dear to them in the evening. I am not a slain man at the hands of men with a leap. They are leveling my grave where my fever was decreed. And when my death appeared at Marv, and my body was empty of it, and my death was approaching, I say to my companions, lift me up, for it pleases my eyes that (Suhayl) has appeared to me.
