The baobab plays a very important role in Madagascar's forests. Especially during long periods of drought, to which all forest inhabitants have to adapt. But these ancient trees are seriously threatened. In Madagascar's dry deciduous forest, each baobab has its own story. The majestic baobabs are the silent guardians of indigenous peoples and their legends. Among the Sakalava, each family has its own tree, which is hollowed out and serves as a water reserve in times of drought. Thanks to its fibrous structure, the trunk acts as a sponge that can store up to 120,000 litres of water. Baobabs are irreplaceable for the biodiversity of the dry forest: lizards, salamanders, snakes, birds and small mammals find food and shelter here. Ants also live in harmony with the tree, enriching the soil around them and allowing rainwater to filter better into the ground. However, the baobabs are seriously endangered and only humans can prevent the disappearance of these unique trees. #dwdocumentary #documentary #madagascar ـــــ DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
