In our third debate this year, we addressed a current and long-discussed topic: the Euro versus the koruna. Should the Czech Republic adopt the euro or keep the crown as its national currency? The debate focused on what consequences the introduction of the euro would have on the Czech economy, the price level and the level of wages. We discussed whether the koruna is a symbol of our economic and political sovereignty that we should preserve, or whether the adoption of the euro could bring greater economic stability, lower transaction costs and a firmer anchoring in European structures. How would a change of currency affect the everyday life of citizens and what advantages or disadvantages could it bring for Czech businesses? Our guests brought different perspectives on the matter, so the students had the opportunity to think about what path they think the Czech Republic should take. We invited Lukáš Kovanda, Ph.D., chief economist of Trinity Bank and former member of NERV, and prof. Ing. Oldřich Dědek, CSc., former coordinator for the introduction of the euro in the Czech Republic, former vice-governor and member of the banking board of the CNB.
