Karl's third marriage with Anna Svídnická made up for everything and the young queen became his great love. ¨ Hundreds of well-known historical figures pass through Karl's life, and their extraordinary destinies and exciting life stories did not leave him without a response. He knew important European monarchs and knights, church dignitaries, but also artists, builders, scholars — and thanks to his excellent regent skills and education, he was able to realize not only the dreams of his father Jan, but also his own, truly noble royal intentions. Archbishop Arnošt of Pardubice, the painter Theodoric, the poet Petrarch, and above all the Roman tribune Cola di Rienzo, who lived in his glory days at the same time as Charles, and even tried to win the imperial crown for himself, played an important role in his personal life. Finally, expelled from Rome by a papal conspiracy, he found refuge in Prague with Charles and later his protection during the final acquitting trial in Avignon. After returning to Rome, Cola regains power, but in a popular uprising, he is literally torn apart by an enraged mob at the moment when Charles crosses the borders of Italy during the coronation ride and thus completes his destiny as ruler and master of the world. The coronation in Rome, despite the dangerous and adventurous vicissitudes, was an unequivocal confirmation of his imperial majesty. LUDMILA VAŇKOVÁ Ludmila Vaňková, real name Paukertová. She is a novelist and author of novels with historical themes. She was born on May 9, 1927 in Prague. In 1942, her father was executed by the Gestapo. She studied sociology and psychology at Karlovy Vary, but in 1948 she was expelled from the FF of the UK for political reasons (a member of the National Social Party). She completed her studies only in the years 1968–71. She first worked as a secretary in various publishing houses (European Literary Club, Czech Writer), later as an editor (Albatros). In 1968, she joined the Communist Party, and left the following year, so from 1973 to 1977 she worked as a switch operator at the Karlštejn railway station. She did not publish until 1977, from which point she is a full-time writer. PAVEL SOUKUP Czech actor and voice actor. He originally graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Charles University. He then started his studies at DAMU. After school, he worked mainly in regional theaters, but later he returned to Prague, where he began performing at the ABC Theatre. He also acted on television.
