Marty Claridge (Katherine Heigl) comes west with her husband Aaron Claridge (Oliver Macready). Shortly afterward Aaron is killed in a horseback riding accident. Pregnant and with no family or friends nearby, Marty needs a place to stay for the winter until she can head east in the spring. With no other options, she accepts an offer from Clark Davis (Dale Midkiff), a widower who offers to give her a place to stay for the winter and the fare for the wagon ride east in the spring in exchange for marrying him because Clark wants to offer a maternal influence to his young daughter Missie (Skye McCole Bartusiak). Clark and Marty sleep apart. At first things don't work out because Marty and Missie don't get along, but little by little they begin to understand and grow fond of each other. Marty learns more about God than she ever dreamed, and as the winter passes they begin to feel like a family. Eventually Marty and Clark realize that they love each other.
