In 2008, 18 mountaineers from various countries attempted to reach the summit of K2 (the 'Killer Mountain'), despite the fact that one in four people die in the attempt. After years of dedication and months of preparation, Wilco van Rooijen and his team reached the summit. But when they returned to the narrowest and most dangerous part of the route during the descent, the ropes had mysteriously disappeared, making a safe descent impossible. Eleven very experienced climbers did not survive the return journey. Wilco was missing for days and lost his toes. Nevertheless, he managed to survive the disastrous expedition without a sleeping bag, food or drinking water. He calls it a miracle that he survived after having been in the 'deadzone' for 60 hours. This incredible and moving story tells of the greatest mountaineering tragedy ever. 'Wonder: stories of the unexplainable' is an EO series on YouTube with the TV series 'Bid, bedank, verwondering' on NPO 2. People talk about a miracle they have experienced in their lives.
