Ever since he was a student at Hogwarts, Lord Voldemort had a very clear goal: to split his soul into 7 parts in order to achieve immortality. He sought to create six Horcruxes and keep another fragment of his soul inside his body. And to achieve this goal, what he needed to get were very special containers in which he could protect his precious soul. And the objects that Voldemort decided to turn into Horcruxes were just as important as the deaths he used to create them. And according to Albus Dumbledore, Voldemort was saving Harry Potter's death to create his last and most important Horcrux, the one that would complete his goal of splitting his soul into seven parts and thus achieve immortality. We also know that a container has to be prepared with spells before it is turned into a Horcrux, which means that the night Voldemort went to the Potter house, he already knew which artifact he wanted to use to create his final Horcrux with the most significant death of all, that of the child from the prophecy. But what was that artifact going to be? Obviously it wasn't going to be Harry Potter because Voldemort planned to kill him, and it wasn't going to be Nagini either because Voldemort met her over a decade later. This means that there is a very special artifact that Voldemort found to safeguard the last fragment of his soul, but was never able to turn it into a Horcrux.
