E-mail: [email protected] =================================== Cesare Lombroso was an Italian who lived in the 19th century, was a professor of forensic medicine and developed several classifications for criminals. These studies gave rise to the Positive Criminal, Anthropological or Biological School, which some scholars also call the Lombrosian School. Within Lombroso's research, the most famous thesis was that of the born criminal, who would be a person with primitive feelings who is born predestined to commit crimes. Lombroso believed that the born criminal would actually be a sick person, a person who has a pathology that leads him to engage in criminal behavior. The conclusion, then, is that this individual should be treated and cured, like a sick person. He would not need to be jailed, but rather a hospital, so that he could recover from his anomaly. In his studies, Lombroso made several notes about what the born criminal would be like. In general terms, he would be an insensitive, impulsive, vain, lazy and resistant to pain. Going further, in his research, Lombroso studied the skulls of more than 300 corpses and outlined what the physical characteristics of the born criminal would be. And what would be the origin of this degeneration that causes an individual to be born a criminal? According to Lombroso's studies, the cause of this pathology would be epilepsy that attacks the nerve centers and distorts the development of the organism. Lombroso's concepts were widely disseminated by medical sciences, especially in the 19th century, and many believed that biological factors could indicate that an individual was more predisposed to crime. However, over time, other scholars began to refute Lombroso's theses, because they realized that there were several factors behind the occurrence of crimes, such as social issues. Nowadays, in Law, we study the Lombrosian School to have this historical notion. But always making the reservation that you can't go around looking at people's faces and saying "you born little criminal".
