The Old Town in Łódź is located in the same place as the centre of the medieval urban settlement – the town of Łódź. The Old Town of Łódź was located on the Łódka River by King Władysław Jagiełło in 1423. The Old Town includes the Old Market Square, Kościelny Square, Staromiejski Park, and the following streets: Kościelna, Drewnowska, Nowomiejska, Zgierska, Podrzeczna, Wolborska, Bojowników Getta Warszawskiego (formerly Żydowska), and currently Zachodnia (formerly Stodolniana). After the foundation of the New Town and the transfer of the centre of urban life to the current Wolności Square, the Old Town became a district inhabited mainly by poor Jews. During the war, the area of the Old Town was incorporated into the Łódź ghetto (Litzmannstadt Ghetto). Later, the housing estate belonging to the ghetto, inhabited mainly by Jews, located between the Old Market Square and the New Town, was demolished. After the war, a park was built in this place, called the Old Town Park.
