The Local Church often claims that its church is founded on a correct foundation. The expression correct foundation of the church means that in a municipality there can only be one church that represents the body of Christ or its church. When asked, “What is the name of your church?” they answer, “Local churches do not have a name. The only name we bear and honor is the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. To call it anything else is to insult Him.” The term local church is not a name; it is a description of the local nature and expression of the church, that is, the church in a locality. Lee would have us believe that the church is only represented in one gathering in any given locality. In other words, as long as there is one Local Church in any given place, there cannot be another like it. The most obvious contradiction of LOCALISM in the Bible is found in Romans 16:5: “And greet the church that is in your house. Greet Epaenetus my beloved, who is the firstfruits of Achaia in Christ.” Paul, writing to the church in Rome, inquired of several members and those who met in the home of Aquila and Priscilla. Although they lived in Rome, they had a church in their home, regardless of who Paul was writing to. If Aquila and Priscilla had been members of the church, or if they had a congregation submissive to it, they would have been present when the Letter to the Romans was read. The local church teaches that the basis of unity is localism, but Jesus said that the basis is Himself (Matt. 7:24-27). In other words, if our basis of faith is a living faith in Jesus Christ, we cannot fail. Matthew 16:16-18 confirms this. Peter answered Jesus’ question: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt. 16:16). Jesus answered, And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18).
