The play highlights certain acts of corruption from a period before the First World War. In a provincial town, the station master is in love with the mayor's wife. But he holds the secret of a big business with a timber train, wanted by the gang from the town hall of the fair. The mayor will easily sacrifice his wife, in exchange for the fruitful business: it is one of the sides mirrored with intelligence and humor in Rebreanu's play. The business is favored by the collusion of senior officials allied in theft and fraud, of course, to the detriment of the state. It is amazing how much similarity there is between the facts of that time and the situation existing here today.
