The trial of Diego Cadena, former lawyer of former President Álvaro Uribe, continues. For the Prosecutor's Office, the lawyer is responsible for favoring the former president "there was a criminal plan to deceive the Supreme Court of Justice." The oral trial hearing is taking place before the 3rd Criminal Court of Knowledge where lawyer Diego Cadena is being investigated. During the trial of Cadena, the Prosecutor's Office revealed audios of the interceptions of the lawyer where he spoke with former President Uribe, Monsalve's wife and other people linked to the process. Diego Cadena has stated that he is innocent of the charges of bribery and procedural fraud for which he is being prosecuted, for these same facts the former President of the Republic, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, is being investigated. The accusations focus on his alleged financial offers to influence the testimony of several witnesses, offering money in order to change their statements in the investigation against Álvaro Uribe. The Prosecutor's Office filed charges against Cadena on July 27, 2021, alleging that he had given alleged bribes to former paramilitary leaders, including Juan Guillermo Monsalve and alias 'Caliche', in order to modify their testimonies in the investigation carried out by the Supreme Court of Justice against Álvaro Uribe Vélez. The case against Diego Cadena originates from the alleged pressure exerted on Juan Guillermo Monsalve and the former paramilitary Carlos Enrique Vélez, alias 'Víctor', to obtain testimonies that would favor Álvaro Uribe. Although Cadena was sent to prison in 2017, he was later released due to expiration of terms. Cadena, according to the Prosecutor's Office, created a strategy that consisted of looking for witnesses, offering them judicial benefits and pre-emptions in exchange for giving their favorable testimony to former President Uribe in 2017. Iván Cancino, Cadena's defense attorney, has maintained in previous hearings that there were no illegal offers and that it was all about help with witnesses' expenses.
