Ban Nong Phiman Nuea, Tambon Krabueang, Amphoe Chumphon Buri, Surin Province is located in Thung Kula Rong Hai, the best area for growing jasmine rice in Thailand. The area of Thung Kula Rong Hai is twice as large as Bangkok, covering an area of approximately 2 million rai, covering 5 provinces: Roi Et, Surin, Maha Sarakham, Sisaket, and Yasothon. The area here has a “pond in the middle of the rice field”, which is very important to the villagers who grow rice. During the rice growing season, if there is no rain, they will use the pond to pump water into the rice field. After the rice harvest, this pond will become a “treasure in the middle of the rice field” that generates money for the villagers. Most of the ponds are auctioned off to people who make a living from fishing. The amount of money they get from each pond varies. “Uncle Thep”, a fisherman from Ban Nong Phiman Nuea, Surin Province, said that every time before fishing, he will first check the fish to see how many there are in the pond. Tips for watching fish in the pond: 1. “Throw a lump of soil” into the pond to startle the fish and allow them to swim up. 2. “Dive and smell the mud” to see what kind of fish smell. 3. Are there white “fishy” stains on the body? This is to see how many fish are in the water. 4. “Scattered water rings” to see if the fish are big or small. The interesting thing about the fish here is that during the rainy season when the fields are flooded, the fish will flow with the water into the rice that falls in the fields, which is jasmine rice. This makes the fish here smell good, not smell like mud, and have a sweet and delicious taste. The caught fish are sold at the “Tang Phat Fish Market,” which is “the largest rice field fish market in the lower Isan region.” This fish market is very lively after the harvest, around November - April of every year.
