Sometimes it seems like we celebrate Christmas as a bland, commercial, and mercantilist holiday, eliminating any reminder of how the story that began in Bethlehem ended, no less, at Calvary. Only a King who loves us so much would dare to leave the great throne to wrap himself in swaddling clothes. He became rags so that we could empathize with Him and love Him. In Jesus, God found a way to relate to humans that does not involve fear. That is what we must always remember: the fall of the little fish who thought they were kings, like Herod, and the birth of the one and only true King of the Universe. That is the essence of Christmas!
