The route of Mannheim's city railway line 3 runs from Sandhofen in the north to the Rheingoldhalle in Neckarau as the southern end point. While the typical, almost village-like settlement structures of the once independent municipality can still be found in the center of Sandhofen, which was first mentioned in documents in 888, line 3 in the north of Mannheim also serves extensive industrial facilities and commercial areas. The 3 is therefore also an important feeder to large employers such as SCA and Roche. It then continues towards the city center via Waldhof. The central transfer hubs are also directly connected to Paradeplatz and the water tower. The new section through the districts of Lindenhof, Almenhof and Neckarau, which opened in 1995, begins with the crossing of the tracks of Mannheim's main station. In keeping with the name of the line branch in the city of Mannheim's original city railway concept, this line is often also called the "B line." The route in the Lindenhof district is technically interesting, where the two directional tracks are routed in a "track loop" due to the limited space. From an operational point of view, this corresponds to a single-track section of the route, but without switches or other movable components. The southern terminus Neckarau Rheingoldhalle is located in a popular local recreation area and is characterized by its proximity to allotments, the Reißinsel, the forest park and, most recently, the Rhine with its public lido.
