Is it necessary to lime the soil every year? Is it a necessary procedure? In arable fields, in commercial horticultural farms, probably yes. But not in home gardens, gardens managed in accordance with nature. You cannot directly translate the practices of commercial and agricultural farms to our home gardens. Why? Because we cultivate them differently, we use different agrotechnical procedures, we use different types of fertilizers. Soil acidification is promoted by: ???? the use of artificial fertilizers; ???? the use of chemical plant protection products; ???? the use of non-composted organic fertilizers, e.g. fresh manure; ???? intensive watering of crops. In home gardens, we can eliminate factors that accelerate soil acidification by: ???? using compost and composted manure ???? not digging up green fertilizers ???? mulching the soil to reduce water evaporation ???? dense planting of plants that cast shade on the soil around the roots ???? limiting grass mowing or cutting it high The use of compost and composted manure is particularly important. Compost has a pH of 6.7, composted manure has a pH of 7.5. By mulching annually, we slow down the process of soil acidification. In vegetable gardens, it is worth limed the beds where cruciferous vegetables will grow next year: cabbages, Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, cauliflower. They like a more alkaline reaction and tolerate fresh liming. In the case of other crops, including ornamental beds and lawns, if we keep the garden in harmony with nature, liming is not necessary. If there is a need to deacidify the soil, it is worth using dolomite or wood ash, they contain a lot of calcium and deacidify the soil.
