Lily Ganan was born in 1932 in Vilnius as the daughter of Masza and Lazar Perewoski. Her family was wealthy, had a sawmill and warehouses. After the outbreak of the war and the occupation of Vilnius by the Russians, the family property was nationalized. The Perewoski family continued to live in their large villa, also making it available to refugees from the western part of Poland, occupied by the Germans. Masza Perewoska took up work in the theater and there met the painter Irena Zadarnowska. She invited her new acquaintance to her home and Irena met her daughter, whom she liked very much. In 1941, the Germans entered Vilnius and the Perewoski family had to move to the ghetto. Masza worked in the Gestapo kitchen, and Lazar cleaned. One day, they received news that Zadarnowska wanted to take Lily to the Aryan side, but they did not take this proposal seriously and ignored it. When the situation in the ghetto began to deteriorate and more and more people were being deported, Irena Zadarnowska contacted them a second time. This time they responded and with her help Lily and Masza left the ghetto. They hid, often changing their place of residence – Irena organised more hiding places for them. A year before the end of the war Masza decided to relieve Irena and her husband, who were risking their lives – she decided to pretend to be a German German and volunteered to go to work in Germany. Masza and Lily left for Constanz on the border with Switzerland. After the end of the war Lily Ganan left for Palestine, where her family took care of her. Her uncle Moshe Shertok was the second prime minister of Israel. Lilu Ganan's family maintained regular contact with Irena Zadarnowska.
