René Descartes (1596–1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist, considered the father of modern philosophy and one of the most influential thinkers in human history. He made essential contributions to the development of the scientific method, mathematics, and epistemology, and his ideas marked a significant break with the medieval scholastic tradition, laying the foundations for rationalist thought. Descartes was born on March 31, 1596, in La Haye, France, into a family of minor nobles. He studied at a Jesuit college, where he received a classical education, but later became critical of traditional teaching methods. He traveled extensively in Europe and devoted himself to the study of mathematics, physics, and philosophy, seeking a universal method for discovering truth. His best-known work, Discourse on Method (1637), introduces the fundamental principle of his philosophy: "Cogito, ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"). This statement represents a starting point for knowledge, based on the indubitable certainty of thought and conscious existence. Descartes argued that reason is the only sure way to reach truth, clearly separating the material world from that of the mind, which led to the development of Cartesian dualism. In mathematics, Descartes made revolutionary contributions, laying the foundations of analytic geometry. The idea of representing mathematical equations on a coordinate system, known today as the Cartesian plane, opened up new horizons in mathematics and science. In physics, he developed mechanistic theories that profoundly influenced scientific thought before Newton. René Descartes died on February 11, 1650, in Sweden, where he had been invited by Queen Christina to instruct her in philosophy. His legacy continues to inspire philosophical and scientific debates, and he is recognized as one of the most important architects of modern thought. His ideal of using reason to discover truth remains a cornerstone in philosophy and science. This video contains quotes from René Descartes.
