A day through the life and everyday life of people in Switzerland. A country in which people enjoy living and where everything actually works. Many people contribute to this day after day. These people in the background shape Swiss identity. SRF "DOK" accompanies 16 of these people for a day through their lives in Switzerland. In the first episode of "We are Switzerland 2018", SRF "DOK" accompanies Judith Schnider, who runs the Volg in Laax, the train conductor Yann Giuliani, the chambermaid Yangdol Depön, and Sebastiano Gaffuri - the youngest mayor in Ticino. How, where and with whom do they live, what does their normal daily routine look like, what do they stand for and what keeps them busy? The 52-year-old Graubünden native, Judith Schnider, is the mother of four grown-up children; only the youngest daughter still lives at home. Judith has an eventful history behind her. She became a mother at the age of 23 and ran various restaurants with her then husband. When she was offered the opportunity to take over the small Volg shop in Zignau, she jumped at the chance. After separating from her husband, she trained as a saleswoman at the age of 42 and raised the children alone. When the small Volg in Zignau closed, she first worked in the neighboring village of Trun and has now been managing the Volg in Laax for a year. Yann Giuliani, 43, from Geneva, lives in Bellegarde in France and has been working for the SBB for eight years. He loves his job. As a communicative person, he enjoys the contact with passengers and traveling all over Switzerland and is always up for a joke. Those who don't know him would hardly suspect that he also knows the dark side of life. Yann's mother was ill, he had a difficult time as a teenager and was a nuisance to everyone, which also made him humble. The 26-year-old Tibetan, Yangdol Depön, has had an eventful time. At 16, she was persecuted by the Chinese police after taking part in a demonstration, so her parents urged her to flee. The young woman reluctantly came to Switzerland as a refugee in 2009 via Bhutan and Nepal. It took six years for her refugee status to be recognized. During this time, she lived in various asylum centers in eastern Switzerland. Fortunately, she soon met her husband Londen at a Tibetan festival. The couple have been married for four years, and their son Tenzin was born two years ago. 28-year-old Ticino native Sebastiano Gaffuri is traveling at high speed. He comes from a family of small business owners and trained as a forester. After a two-year stay in German-speaking Switzerland, he and a colleague took over the private forestry and landscape protection company AFOR. Today, it is already the largest employer in the Valle di Muggio, in the southernmost part of Switzerland. Sebastiano's father was already a member of the FDP, and his interest in politics was practically in his blood. He is a big fan of the Swiss political and militia system and believes that the people of Ticino should make more of the opportunities available in Switzerland. At just 25 years of age, he was elected to the cantonal parliament for the FDP, and a year later he became the youngest mayor in Ticino - of Breggia, a municipality association of six municipalities in the valley.
