In November 2012, a man took hostages and barricaded himself inside a credit union in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture, for 13 hours. The man who was arrested was 32 years old at the time. The reporter met with the man and exchanged letters with him for the interview. Five years after the incident, the reporter suddenly received a letter from the man, who had lost contact with him while serving a sentence. In it, he expressed his determination to rehabilitate himself. However, four years later, in June 2022, shortly after his release from prison, the man once again took hostages at an internet cafe in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. Why did the man who had resolved to rehabilitate himself in prison commit another crime? The reporter who interviewed the man for the first time in 10 years felt the loneliness he felt after his release. At the trial in December 2023, the man said that there was a "50/50" chance that he would commit a similar crime after his next release.
