Full text of the inaugural lecture: https://books.openedition.org/cdf/9292 A recognized specialist in the ancient history of Africa, François-Xavier Fauvelle, born in 1968, is part of a new generation of researchers who have endeavored to provide us with a history of connected, living and global Africa, always in motion. By opening epistemological reflection on writing and archaeology, his work offers specialists, but also the general public, the opportunity to discover or rediscover the variety and singularity of African worlds by fighting against the prejudices of an Africa "without history". During his career, François-Xavier Fauvelle has invested in many areas across the continent. These include the South and Southern Africa, where he conducted a vast investigation into the figure of the Hottentot; the East and Horn of Africa, where he directed the French Center for Ethiopian Studies in Addis Ababa and co-discovered the Ethiopian city of Ifat, capital of the sultanate that bears his name and which was the main Islamic political formation in 15th-century Ethiopia; and finally the North and the Maghreb around the excavation site of Sijilmâsa, an oasis city located on the edge of the Sahara, which established a connection between the Mediterranean and Islamic world on the one hand and the sub-Saharan world on the other for more than 700 years.
