Itaipu Binacional and Itaipu Parquetec will present 208 projects from 16 public higher education institutions in Paraná and southern Mato Grosso do Sul that were selected to be part of the Extension Program for Territorial Sustainability, an initiative by Itaipu mais que Energia in conjunction with the Federal Government that focuses on promoting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The lecture “Climate Emergency – Challenges for Humanity” will also be held, with climatologist Carlos Nobre, one of the most respected and well-known Brazilian scientists in the world. Carlos Nobre is one of the authors of the Fourth Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He was also announced in May of this year as the first Brazilian to join the Planetary Guardians group, a group of researchers and activists in favor of climate action and the protection of vulnerable communities. He is currently a research associate at the Institute of Advanced Studies at USP and co-chair of the Scientific Panel for the Amazon (SPA). In articles and interviews with the press, Nobre has been warning about the irreversible stage of climate change and the need for urgent action by governments, companies, organizations in general and individuals themselves to prepare for a world in which the climate is aggressive and unpredictable. Given this scenario, the challenge is enormous, especially for the most vulnerable communities, which, by the way, are the main target of the initiatives of the Extension Program for Territorial Sustainability and the selected projects.
