As part of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo's death (1324-2024) and the 770th anniversary of his birth (1254-2024), the Consulate General and the Italian Cultural Institute in Shanghai, in collaboration with the Shanghai Library, the Shanghai Normal University and the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia-Treccani, presented the conference held by Professor Alessandro Barbero entitled “Marco Polo's Description of the World and His Readers: a Historical-Geographical Encyclopaedia Mistaken for a Fantastic Book”. The event is part of the conference program on the theme “Marco Polo: A Tale of Books” (September 2024 – March 2025) and took place at the Shanghai Library East, the venue hosting the exhibition “Real and Imaginary Lands, China and Marco Polo: A Tale of Books” (November 3, 2024 – February 28, 2025).
