From the series A Work of Art as a Source of Knowledge of Life in the Middle Ages. Colors play a very important role in our lives, but also in history. White is in itself just as important a color as red, blue, green or yellow – and just like them, white has its own, interesting history. Before the 17th century, the status of white as a true color was never questioned. On the contrary, from ancient times until the High Middle Ages, white, red and black formed a chromatic triad, which played an important role not only in life but also in art. White also has a rich symbolic history. It was often associated with purity, virginity, innocence, wisdom, peace and beauty. We also usually perceive it as the opposite of black, but this was not always the case. For example, in the Middle Ages, its exact opposite was red. The lecture will present selected chapters from the history of the color white in Europe from ancient times to almost the present day. The main emphasis will be placed on the Middle Ages.
