From the series A Work of Art as a Source of Knowledge of Life in the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages was a period that is associated primarily with the world of men. However, we must not forget that women also played an important role, fulfilling primarily the roles of wives, mothers and daughters. Even though the vast majority of them are completely nameless to us, we know of a number of exceptional women who managed to step out of the “male” shadow in a more significant way. We are best informed about the lives of princesses, queens and empresses, many of whom demonstrated not only their regal abilities. Next come influential nuns and noblewomen, whose life stories were noteworthy and some, with their exemplary lives and deeds, were even ranked among saints. In the late Middle Ages, women from lower social classes also came to the fore. The lecture will introduce the lives of a total of ten women from the Czech Middle Ages who made a significant contribution to our history.
