Warrant Officer Laurent, armament expert at the Army Museum, presents the Lebel model 1886 rifle: the legendary weapon of the First World War! The Lebel rifle was adopted in 1886. The first standard repeating rifle in the French army and also the first to use small-caliber ammunition, the Lebel was considered at the time to be the most modern weapon in the world. Although no longer manufactured in 1914, the Lebel rifle remained the basic weapon of the French infantryman at the start of the First World War. It returned to service, particularly in the Resistance in 1940-44, and ended its career in Algeria in the early 1960s.
