Lecture series as part of the “Act for Education” (APE) program: Learning to read and its difficulties Lecture on February 15, 2023: How does the brain change when we learn to read? Speaker: Johannes Ziegler, CNRS, Aix-Marseille University Reading is the backbone of all learning. The ease of this process in the expert reader – who can read about two hundred words per minute without any effort – makes us forget the complexity of the machinery behind one of humanity's greatest inventions. Since its creation as a scientific discipline, psychology has always been interested in the study of reading, its automatisms, and its learning. Today, we know its components and cogs like a mechanic knows the parts and transmission paths that make engines run. Beyond the now-obsolete divisions, there is now a real science of reading, whose advances allow us to offer students quality teaching. In this presentation, I will return to the mechanisms underlying learning to read. This will allow us to better understand both why some children have difficulty learning to read, but also how to better support them in this sometimes long and perilous process.
