To do this, we will use an 8-ounce measuring cup. We'll start with fruits. Almost all fruits that are the size of a fist or that fit inside a cup count as 15 grams of carbohydrates. However, if the fruit is chopped, such as pineapple or papaya, it will also count as 15 grams of carbohydrate. There are two exceptions: watermelon and cantaloupe, where one cup counts as 7 grams of carbohydrate, and banana, which counts as 30 grams of carbohydrate for a whole banana or 15 grams for a similarly sized banana. As for tubers and grains, a medium-sized potato counts as 15 grams of carbohydrate, as does a piece of plantain or cassava of the same size. Rice counts as 45 grams of carbohydrate per cup, and pasta also counts as 45 grams of carbohydrate per cup. Legumes, such as beans, chickpeas, and lentils, count between 25 and 30 grams of carbohydrate per cup depending on the consistency of the preparation. Baked goods, such as bread, mojito, or pan de bono, count as 30 grams of carbohydrate per serving. For example, an arepa similar in size to a tennis ball can have around 30 grams of carbohydrates.
