The main difference is in the starting point and the character of the melody generated by the initial note. The C major scale follows the sequence C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C and has its strong point (or "tonic") in C. The A natural minor scale uses the same notes, but starts on A, following A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A. This change in the starting point gives the A minor scale a more melancholic or introspective sound, while the C major scale sounds more cheerful and open. So, although they are formed by the same notes, the C major scale is considered a major scale and the A minor scale is a minor scale, and this is due to the difference in the feeling that each one conveys and in its tonic.
