There are specific alternator test benches for this service, but if you don't have one, you can do the test with a regular bench. Just clamp the alternator in the clamp and position an electric motor with at least 1.5 HP with the pulleys aligned and place an alternator belt from any car so that the electric motor turns the alternator. Connect a battery between the alternator housing and the alternator's positive power output pin, install a light bulb between the positive and the alternator's pilot light output and place a multimeter on the end of the cables in parallel with the battery connection. With the electric motor turning and the belt tensioned, the battery voltage should be between 13.50v and 14.50v. This indicates that the alternator is working properly and can be replaced in the car.
