About :

The differential consists of the last component of the power transmission before it reaches the wheels, after passing through the speed regulating gears (the famous gears: first, second, third, reverse...). This component compensates the speed between the wheels of each drive axle, when the vehicle goes around curves. It also allows the engine power to be transmitted at a 90-degree angle. In physics, we study uniform circular motion, which defines that the speed of a body in circular trajectories varies according to the radius of the curve. When going around them, the car will have two different speeds on each wheel of an axle: the inner wheel will travel a shorter distance, while the outer wheel will need to turn more to complete the same circumference. If they were connected by a rigid bar, they would be forced to maintain the same speed. However, since the outer wheel travels a greater distance, it would slip. This effect would harm stability and cause great mechanical and tire wear. That said, the differential consists of a set of gears to regulate the speed of the inner and outer wheels to the radius of the curve, preventing slippage. The main components of the differential are: cardan (output of the force gears and input to the differential), right and left half shafts (output from the differential to the wheels), crown, pinion, planetary gears and satellite. The latter are responsible for compensating the speeds of the inner and outer wheels. Below, a figure shows its composition: How it works When the vehicle moves, the cardan delivers power to the pinion, which is in contact with the crown and satellite gears. They all rotate at a constant speed, according to the transmission ratio. When making a curve, the planetary and satellite gears change speed and rotate faster or slower, depending on which way the curve is. In both cases, they act to make the outer wheel rotate faster to compensate for the greater distance traveled. The expected counterpart is the decrease in the speed of the inner wheel, due to the arrangement of satellite gears. Thus, slippage does not occur and driveability is improved.
