From the beginning of the 1950s, the city of Firminy planned the construction of a new district, Firminy-Vert. Nicknamed Firminy-la-Noire in the 1950s, the city intended to offer a new living environment to its residents and a true "center for the re-creation of body and mind". The master plan for the district was designed by André Sive, Marcel Roux, Charles Delfante and Jean Kling, who submitted it to Le Corbusier for corrections. This plan was in fact inspired by the Charter of Athens and took up the principles of the Radiant City developed by Le Corbusier. The mayor, Eugène Claudius-Petit, former Minister of Reconstruction and Urban Planning and friend of Le Corbusier, wanted the complex to be equipped with a cultural center, a sports center and housing. © FLC / ADAGP / SNBPE
