In this presentation we have Enrique Montoliu, who will talk to us mainly about his two passions and personal projects in his life, the Garden of L'Albarda and the FUNDEM foundation that buys natural land to maintain it for the future so that people can visit it. But he also talks about his personal experiences, as well as things that have marked his way of understanding and seeing the world and doing what he does. Enrique Montoliú is one of those people who claim to have been born twice. The first, biologically, was in 1948; and the second, vitally, in 1990, when he became a gardener. This Valencian chemical engineer dedicated his professional career to the management of the family company dedicated to industrial refrigeration until his retirement. In 1990 he wanted to buy a second home and opted for Pedreguer, very close to Jávea, where he spent the family summers of his childhood. Next to the house he decided to build a garden, with a Renaissance influence, due to the great profusion of native plants. And that is how the Albarda Garden was born, which years later would open to the public and is now listed as one of the 150 most beautiful gardens in the world. The garden currently has more than 50,000 square metres and nearly 700 native species. His life took such a turn that in 1996 he decided to create the Enrique Montoliú Foundation (FUNDEM) with two fundamental purposes: to spread the great advantages that Mediterranean gardening could have on the development of native plants; and on the other hand, to acquire land for its integral conservation and make it an example of the biodiversity of flora and fauna. Currently, FUNDEM has 15 plots of land spread across Spain and this year several purchases of farms of high ecological value have already been confirmed.
