Surrounded by the majestic Alps and charming towns, it attracts tourists from all over the world. Also called “Lago di Como”, it is the third largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, but it is Como that is considered the most luxurious and exclusive. The History and Importance of Lake Como Lake Como has a rich history that dates back to the ancient Romans. In the Middle Ages, the region developed as a centre of culture and trade, and its many castles and fortifications testify to its strategic importance. Over the centuries, Lake Como has attracted artists, writers and aristocrats who were fascinated by its beauty and used it as a source of inspiration. The most famous towns on Lake Como Lake Como is surrounded by charming towns, each with its own unique character and offering something special for visitors. One of the most famous is Bellagio, known as the "pearl of Lake Como". This small town, located on a peninsula dividing the lake in two, is known for its elegant villas, narrow streets and beautiful gardens. Villa Melzi, with its exotic plants and historic sculptures, is one of the most important points to visit. Another must-see is the town of Varenna, located on the eastern shore of the lake. Known for its romantic walks along the lake, picturesque houses and rich history, Varenna is the perfect place for a quiet holiday away from the crowds of tourists. The town of Como, which gives its name to the entire lake, cannot be missed either. Como is famous for its cathedral, the Duomo di Como, one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Italy. Villas on Lake Como Lake Como is known for the many magnificent villas that dot its shores. Many of these residences have witnessed history and have hosted famous figures from all over the world. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is one of the most impressive examples, famous for its beautiful botanical gardens, which are home to rare plant species from all over the world.
