The dense forests and rugged coastlines that surround black sand beaches impress visitors as much as the incomparable natural experience. The island, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, has numerous nature reserves, including the Caldera de Taburiente National Park in the interior. The lava flows that reach the sea have created a flat, rocky coastline with small bays surrounded by cliffs. La Palma is small but very high, making it one of the highest islands in the world. One of its many high peaks is Roque de los Muchachos, which plays a world leading role in astrophysics thanks to its modern observatory with avant-garde telescope facilities.
