Welcome to the MrAkumulator channel! Today we will compare three different battery technologies: lead-acid with liquid electrolyte for deep discharge, AGM for cyclic operation and LiFePO4 batteries. We will focus on their performance and durability, especially taking into account the cyclic operation of the battery. In our test, we used batteries with a capacity of 100Ah, and the discharge time of each of them at a load of 300W turned out to be a key parameter. Lead-acid batteries with liquid electrolyte are one of the oldest and most well-known technologies on the market. Their design is relatively simple, and the purchase cost is low compared to newer technologies. These batteries are often chosen due to their ability to deep discharge. During the test, the lead-acid battery lasted about 175 minutes at a load of 300W. Although this result is significantly shorter than in the case of LiFePO4 batteries, lead-acid batteries have their advantages, such as lower initial cost and wide availability. However, deep discharges can shorten their lifespan, making them less effective in applications that require regular charge and discharge cycles. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are an improved version of traditional lead-acid batteries. In these batteries, the electrolyte is absorbed by glass fiber mats, which reduces the risk of leakage and allows for greater resistance to vibration and shock. AGM batteries are often chosen for cyclic applications, such as backup power systems, RVs, and boats. In our test, the AGM battery lasted about 186 minutes at a load of 300W. Although this result is better than that of a lead-acid battery, AGM batteries are more expensive and have a limited number of charge/discharge cycles compared to LiFePO4 batteries. Their higher durability in cyclic applications, however, makes them a better choice compared to lead-acid batteries with liquid electrolyte. LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries are the latest and most advanced technology in our comparison. Known for their high efficiency and long life, LiFePO4 batteries are the ideal choice for applications that require regular charge and discharge cycles. They have a higher energy density, meaning they are lighter and more compact than their lead-acid counterparts. In our test, a LiFePO4 battery lasted an impressive 248 minutes at 300W. That’s over an hour longer than other batteries. What’s more, LiFePO4 batteries can withstand thousands of charge and discharge cycles, making them more cost-effective in the long run, despite their higher initial cost. They are also safer to use, as they are less prone to overheating and explosions. In summary, choosing the right battery depends on your specific needs and applications. If budget is a major constraint and the battery will be used only occasionally, a lead-acid battery with a liquid electrolyte may be the right choice. For applications that require greater durability and safety, such as campers or emergency power systems, AGM batteries are the better choice. However, if long-term performance and reliability are your top priorities, LiFePO4 batteries are unbeatable. Their longer runtime and higher number of charge/discharge cycles make them the best option for applications that require regular use, such as sailing, fishing or powering off-grid systems.
