There is a fire on the roof at KTM and Pierer Mobility. The motorcycle manufacturer and its dealers are sitting on a record number of unsold machines - and this represents an existential liquidity problem for KTM: The company needs more than a hundred million euros - and is now pulling the plug on production as well. In January and February, the production lines in Mattighofen will be idle. Last week, Volkswagen started its cooperation with the electric car start-up Rivian. Almost half of the 5.7 billion euros that Volkswagen is investing in the partnership will be used to stabilize Rivian over the next few years; the company has burned through an estimated 17 billion dollars so far. Siemens CEO Roland Busch is currently being celebrated like a rock star on the stock market: With record profits, a dividend increase and an optimistic forecast for the coming financial year, Busch, who holds a doctorate in physics, is hoping for tailwind for the internal restructuring of the group. ************************** ???? After a sharp drop in sales over the past twelve months - and what is probably much more than optimistic production planning, the warehouses are full - and the capital required to finance these stocks is huge. The company's net debt has risen from EUR 300 million to over EUR 1.5 billion since 2022. To secure liquidity for 2025, Pierer Mobility AG needs bridging financing in the three-digit million range. And the Mattighofen production site will be shut down in January and February. ***************************************** Volkswagen and Rivian: 5.8 billion bet on the digital future The Rivian deal is intended as a liberating move for Volkswagen after the flop with its software subsidiary Cariad. The latter's problems cost the predecessor of current VW boss Blume, Herbert Diess, his job. Experts say there is no alternative to the cooperation if Volkswagen wants to become competitive in vehicle software. The new Rivian joint venture is now to become a group-wide technology service provider and do what Cariad should have done. Almost half of the 5.7 billion euros that Volkswagen is investing in the partnership will be used to stabilize Rivian over the next few years. The company, founded in 2009, has so far burned through an estimated 17 billion dollars - and has not yet made a single quarter of profit. In the last fiscal year, losses of 5.4 billion euros even exceeded sales. ************************** Glock: The slow decline of a pop culture icon No brand from Austria - not even Red Bull - has managed to influence pop culture, especially in the USA, as lastingly as the Carinthian pistol manufacturer Glock. In television series such as Miami Vice and Hollywood films from Terminator to Die Hard, actors such as Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis walked across the screen with the weapon from Deutsch-Wagram. With the breakthrough of gangster rap in popular music - much to the displeasure of the company founder, by the way - the handgun from Deutsch-Wagram finally became a cult object. And it all started relatively small - and not until the 1980s. ************************** ???? INDUSTRIEMAGAZIN NEWS is your weekly deep dive into the diverse world of Austrian industry.
