Kreiensen locomotive 044 Long before 1976, it was known that the end of the heavy freight train steam locomotives of the 044 series of the German Federal Railway was approaching. 25 to 30 machines, based in the Ottbergen depot, were used in the area of the then Federal Railway Directorate Hanover. This also included the service between Kreiensen and Braunschweig. The 044 389-3 was the machine that pulled the last freight train from Kreiensen to Altenbeken on May 29, 1976. The last 044 now stands as a monument in front of the Egge Museum in Altenbeken. The last DB steam freight trains towards Braunschweig in 1975 as a Super Eight sound film.
