This year, the mung bean harvest is bountiful, so Grandma Jeong Yeong-ae finds this arduous work simply enjoyable. Grandma Jeong Yeong-ae, who has farmed mung beans her entire life, says that one of the greatest joys in life is sending the grains she harvests to her children every year. She started making mung bean makgeolli for her son who is performing a play about the mung bean general Jeon Bong-jun. Along with mung bean makgeolli, another ingredient that is always made is hwangpomuk, which is colored beautifully with gardenia water. Hwangpomuk, which goes well with makgeolli, is also a representative ingredient in Jeonju bibimbap. After a long wait, on the day the water is drawn, a simple meal is prepared for the mother with cool mung bean makgeolli, hwangpomuk, and hwangpomuk bibimbap mixed with various vegetables. ■ Anjwa-myeon, Sinan, 97-year-old oldest grandmother’s birthday The villagers gathered to celebrate the birthday of 97-year-old Jeong Ma-geum, the oldest person in Anjwa-myeon. The grandmother, who farmed the mung bean field until she was 90, still helps out by pounding the mung beans harvested by her daughter. Choi Mi-soon, the village head, who returned to her hometown to care for her elderly mother who lives alone, is a famous filial daughter in the village.
