Esophageal cancer (esophageal carcinoma) is one of the rarer types of cancer, accounting for around 2 percent of cases. In Germany, around 7,200 new cases are diagnosed each year, with men being affected more often than women. Difficulty swallowing is usually the first sign of the disease. The most important treatment for esophageal cancer is surgical removal of the tumor. In the podcast, Prof. Dr. med. Bodo Schniewind, chief physician of the Clinic for General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery at the Lüneburg Clinic, explains treatment options.
