The term microbiome refers to the totality of all microorganisms that colonize a person. They can influence the immune system, metabolism or hormonal system, among other things. The intestinal microbiome consists of around 500 to 1,000 different microorganisms. However, diseases, habits or external influences can have negative consequences on this diversity over time. An intact intestinal microbiome is essential because, among other things, it forms the protective layer of the intestine, plays a role in vitamin production and is in close contact with the immune and nervous systems. What many people are not aware of is that in addition to diseases such as diarrhea, stomach ulcers and chronic intestinal inflammation, the microbiome also plays a role in asthma, diabetes mellitus and depression. In the podcast, Prof. Dr. med. Torsten Kucharzik, chief physician of the Department of General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, explains, among other things, what the intestinal microbiome is, how it is formed, why it is important and which diseases are related to the impairment of the microbiome.
