The first bridge across the Danė River in Klaipėda is mentioned already in 1253. Due to constant wars and attacks, the city's bridges were destroyed and rebuilt many times. 17th century there were several bridges in Mēmel at that time, and the main one is the current Birža bridge over the Danė river, connecting Tiltė and Herkaus Mantos streets. Near the port of Klaipėda, on Žvejų street, on the overpass connecting the Danė river with the castle fossa, there is a unique wrought iron technical device with technical, historical and architectural value. It is a cantilever swing bridge. Its hourly rotation has already become a kind of attraction. This technical monument is the only mechanism of its kind in the Baltic States. The predecessor of the current Castle (Karl) Bridge was built in 1826. instead of the ferry across Denmark. It was originally a wooden one, named after Prince Charles, son of Frederick William III.
