Kelly & Lewis KL-Bulldog (Australia) The Australian company Kelly & Lewis was a major importer of Lanz tractors before the Second World War. When export restrictions continued to hinder the export of further tractors after the war, Kelly & Lewis decided to set up its own production facility with Lanz. In 1946, preparations began to build a replica of the Lanz D8506. However, it would take until 1949 before the first tractor could be delivered. The production facilities were designed to produce large quantities, but since quality defects were apparent from the start, the number of tractors actually produced was limited, supposedly a maximum of ten per day. The high price, which was comparable to the original, which was imported again from 1949, also prevented a breakthrough. Defective transmissions, overheating engines and overall serious quality defects meant that many owners resorted to original Lanz parts for repairs or replacements. A solution to the overheating of the engines was found by injecting water into the combustion chamber in addition to the diesel and increasing the boost pressure, which not only prevented overheating but also provided a little more power. A peculiarity of many of the tractors used in Australia is the lack of a foot brake, not just on the KL Bulldog. The two large handles on the rear rims, the large exhaust muffler and the three-spoke steering wheel are also clearly visible. The latter was often replaced, however, as it was cumbersome when starting the tractor. Production was stopped at the end of 1953, only 800 to 1000 units were made (varies according to the publication). On an Australian website I found information that around 90 units are still roadworthy today and around 10 units have been exported overseas. I was able to photograph one of them. The owner wants to keep it in its original state, but cannot get it road-legal because it does not have a foot brake. So far I have not been able to find any data on dimensions and weights, but these should be essentially identical to those of the original Lanz D8506. info from Fahrzeugseiten.de
