Constantine of Greece in an exclusive interview with documentary filmmaker Julia Melchior for BROADVIEW TV and ZDF about his life as the last king of the Hellenes. Together with Queen Anne-Marie, they set out to search for traces in Athens and recall the life story of the former king, which is also a love story. The love for his homeland, his wife and his family. No statue, no street and no stone today reminds us of the time when Greece was still a kingdom. When King Constantine II led the Danish Princess Anne-Marie to the altar on September 18, 1964, the whole of Athens was on its feet. A great moment for the monarchy, it seemed. The young king, Olympic sailing champion, was the darling of the Greek people. His very young bride was the most beautiful princess Europe had to offer at the time. Just a few months earlier, at the age of 23, Constantine had succeeded his father, who had died young. "I want to be the king of all Greeks, regardless of their political affiliations. My power is the love of the people,” he said when he took office. But Constantine was only able to hold the helm of Greece for three years. He quickly became embroiled in disputes with the political leadership. His lack of experience proved fatal and plunged the nation into a constitutional crisis. After a military coup in 1967, the royal family left the country and the monarchy was abolished. They lived in exile in England for over forty years, and in 2013 Constantine and Anne-Marie returned to Greece. Constantine had no ambitions for the throne or politics. He wanted to spend his retirement in his homeland. “KING WITHOUT A CROWN” tells the story of the Greek royal family in a very personal way. In exclusive interviews with King Constantine, Queen Anne-Marie, the eldest son Prince Pavlos and historians, significant events of the 20th century and their consequences for the country and the family are examined. The film depicts how a king without a crown and his family live with opulent footage from the past and present.
