This documentary shows the Ortler: the highest peak in South Tyrol and a classic of the Eastern Alps. Away from the hustle and bustle of the normal route, we accompany three friends on their tour from Trafoi. A journey through time with relics from the First World War that were just covered by the glacier. Author: Kilian Neuwert At 3,905 meters, the Ortler is the highest peak in South Tyrol and can be seen from afar. It is a magnet for mountaineers: one of the great classic peaks of the Eastern Alps. Many dream of climbing one of its ridges. The program accompanies three friends on such a tour. But they have opted for a rarely used climb: Away from the hustle and bustle of the normal route and the back ridge, the Pleisshorn ridge leads to the summit. But the solitude has its price: no other route requires so many meters of altitude to be overcome. Endurance is required on the Pleisshorn ridge. Similar to the route of the first climbers of the Ortler, it leads from Trafoi to the summit. The town on the Stilfserjoch road, along with Sulden, was crucial for the development of tourism in the region more than 100 years ago. Today, the valley towns are located in the middle of the Stilfserjoch National Park. For the mountaineers in front of and behind the camera, the climb was like a journey through time: The ascent leads past barracks from the First World War. They were once covered in thick glacial ice. But the hot summer melted that. Relics that soldiers left behind at an altitude of over 3,000 meters when the war ended in 1918 are now visible: leftover ammunition, blankets and mail.
