Elisabeth of Thuringia (1207-1231) is considered, after Francis of Assisi, the most famous representative of the poverty movement in the 13th century. She still fascinates many people today because, as a representative of the European high nobility, she voluntarily chose a life of poverty and charity out of Christian conviction. She ran a hospital in Marburg for 4 years and died there at the age of 24. The Teutonic Order built the 80-meter-high Gothic Elisabeth Church over her grave.
