In this video: Video, picture and calls of the kestrel Name: Kestrel Family: Falconidae Characteristic features/appearance: Grey head, speckled breast, rust-brown upperparts with black diamond patterns, grey tail with black terminal band. The wing tips on the upperside of the primaries are also black. Legs yellowish. Easily recognised in the fields by the so-called hovering flight, where it looks for prey in one place in the air. Size: 31-37 cm Weight: 136-252 g Age: Up to 20 years Females: Females are slightly larger and more simply coloured. Song/calls: Its call consists of quick, short, sharp notes "ki ki ki ki". The begging calls of the young and the female are a whimpering, vibrating, repeatedly repeated trill "kir'r'rl..." Breeding season: March - July, 1 annual brood, 26-30 day breeding period Nest: In rock niches and caves, incubators, church towers or other building structures. Clutch size: 4-7 eggs Food: Small rodents such as voles, but also insects and lizards Habitat: As cultural followers, kestrels can be found in villages and towns. Natural enemies: Stone martens, which attack the eggs or young birds. The adult birds can sometimes be undone by catching the eye of hawks or peregrine falcons with their conspicuous hovering flight.
