In line with the registration of Goguryeo historical sites as a World Cultural Heritage, the dynamics of Goguryeo history and culture and the issues of succession are highlighted through a joint survey of Goguryeo sites by historians from the South and the North. Part 2 Goguryeo Murals Meet the World ◼︎ Murals Meet Goguryeo People 1,500 Years Ago Records can be distorted, but paintings honestly testify to 1,500 years ago. China focused on large-scale royal palace maintenance in its World Cultural Heritage application, while North Korea focused on murals. Of the mural tombs discovered so far, 30 are from the Chinese family and 73 are from the Pyongyang area, overturning predictions that China would be the majority. The concentrated appearance of mural tombs in the Pyongyang area is related to the heyday of Goguryeo culture after the relocation of the capital to Pyongyang, and the themes and expressions of the paintings also show a more mature aspect. Although there are many murals in the world, the reason they are called ‘Goguryeo’ murals is because they contain such a unique culture. ◼︎ First filming, Susan-ri murals Meet Goguryeo people at a splendid outing 1,500 years ago. The facial expressions and clothing of Goguryeo people are vivid in the appearance of noblewomen wearing pleated skirts and with their faces covered with kongji and the attendants following them with bat-shaped umbrellas. Anak Tomb No. 3, also known as an underground palace, has a burial mound over 30m high and majestic tomb pillars. Goguryeo people recreated their living spaces in the underground tombs in the hope that their lives in this world would continue in the afterlife. In Anak Tomb No. 3, you can see kitchens and barns from 1,500 years ago. The themes of Goguryeo murals change from portraits to decorative patterns to portraits of the Four Guardian Gods. In Jinpari Tomb No. 1, you can smell the fragrance of lotus flowers blowing in the wind and see the noble figure of a pine tree guarding the tomb with a black tortoise on the north wall. We will restore the image of the tomb of King Dongmyeong, the founder of Goguryeo, before it was excavated, and visit Gangseo Daemyo, famous for its four guardian deities. The state of preservation of the murals confirmed on site was much more vivid than in the catalog, but due to moisture rising from the ground, a thick layer of calcium carbonate was formed at the bottom of the murals, and many parts have fallen off, confirming the urgent task of preservation. The fact that the Goguryeo murals were recognized for their value through the registration as a World Cultural Heritage is not only because of the excellence of the murals, but also because they contain universal human values and emotions such as a sublime consciousness of death and sublimation.
