In the spring of 1940, thousands of Poles, including officers, police officers and clergymen, were murdered in the Katyn Forest near Smolensk on Stalin's personal orders. The men had fallen into the hands of the Red Army when it, together with the German Wehrmacht, invaded and occupied Poland in 1939.
