About :

K&F Concept sent me two variable neutral density filters that I had the opportunity to test. These are filters with values ranging from ND 2 to ND 32, one, and from ND 8 to ND 128 the other, which means that they have a capacity to block light reaching the camera sensor of between 1 and 5 and 3 and 7 exposure points respectively. FILTER CHARACTERISTICS The strengths of this filter are based on its build quality. They are glass filters, and specifically Nano X optical glass that is also coated with 18 anti-glare layers and with a treatment to protect against scratches and against splashes of water and grease. In addition, this treatment is not only on the front of the filter but on both sides, which increases the optical performance and on the other hand it is logical since this type of filter is not composed of a glass but of two positions one on top of the other that rotate and when rotating achieves the effect of letting more or less light through. The construction of the frame is also very good, it is made of aeronautical aluminum and is very robust. In addition, the ring rotates very fluidly, smooth enough so that it does not jump but firm enough so that it does not move inadvertently. This is in terms of construction, but if we talk about the results achieved by the filter, that is where the success of the filter design can be truly valued. This filter, unlike other much more expensive ones on the market, achieves something very important, which is to reach the end of its travel, that is, the point of greatest light blockage, without producing the black cross effect on the image that is something that happens to most variable neutral density filters when they reach their maximum value. USAGE OF ND FILTERS IN PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO An ND filter is used to reduce the amount of light that reaches the camera sensor. It is the same thing that can be done by closing the diaphragm, increasing the speed or lowering the ISO. The thing is that these elements of the exposure triangle have limitations: The ISO cannot be lowered below 100 in most cameras, some go as low as 50 ISO. The shutter speed in photography can be raised a lot, but there are some types of photography in which we do not want high speeds but the opposite, for example the silky effect in water or clouds. We can close the diaphragm but sometimes we want to take photos in broad daylight and with the diaphragm fully open to have very little depth of field and a very out-of-focus background. In video, things are even more complicated because, if we want to get a film with natural movement, the shutter speed should not be more than double the frames per second (fps) of the film. In all these situations, we have too much light and excess light can prevent us from taking the photo we have in mind. To get it we would have to resort to a “light breaker” which is what an ND or neutral density filter is.
